MUSIC AND SONG
The Tobar an Dualchais/ Kist o Riches website contains thousands of oral recordings in Gaelic, Scots and English, recorded in Scotland and further afield, from the 1930s onwards. It is arranged by county and offers an effective way in to finding local material.
One of the best starting points is the Scotland’s Songs site, a particularly good resource for both primary and secondary schools, with a wealth of material in Scots and Gaelic and links to plenty of songs on particular topics. To help you navigate Scotland’s Songs and get the most out of it, there’s a complementary site, put together by Ewan McVicar. For Primary 3 and under Scots Sangs fur Schools has material suited to the younger age group, again put together by Ewan McVicar.

New Child Protection Guide for Creative Partners
A new child protection guide for the creative community in Scotland has been launched to reflect important developments in legislation and policy. Creating Safety (2011), produced as a joint venture by Children in Scotland and Creative Scotland, reflects new national guidance on child protection, the introduction of the Protecting of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme, and changing attitudes towards risk assessment.
Creating Safety is useful for anyone working with children and young people in creative activities, from large arts or heritage organisations developing policy and procedures for child protection to volunteers or freelance professional artists working with children and young people. The guide is aimed at for example, a dancer or film-maker setting up a programme of sessions with a youth group, or a storyteller or musician working in an early years setting.
Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme
Voluntary Arts Scotland has published a briefing on the Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme which is now in effect.

Curriculum for Excellence Q&As
A new series of questions and answers has been developed to help practitioners understand Curriculum for Excellence and how it’s being embedded within educational establishments across Scotland. The information is intended to support leaders, managers, practitioners and others within the education community in their own understanding of many of the key issues surrounding areas such as certification, assessment, making subject choices, parent or carer engagement and support for implementation. The document has been published as a PDF on the Education Scotland website.
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
Social enterprises are businesses that trade specifically for social and/or environmental purposes, as opposed to trading for an individual owner’s financial benefit, or for shareholder value. It is a growing field which is beginning to attract cultural and community projects as a way of addressing questions of financial stability and sustainability. The key organisation in Scotland is Social Enterprise Scotland which includes a network for cultural and creative social enterprises. For advice and support on starting up a social enterprise, the Scottish Government has set in place a programme called Just Enterprise
This page gives an idea of what a social enterprise is, and how you can recognise one from the way it behaves.
